It is well known that Banco Chinchorro is one of Mexico’s richest coral reef sites and that various unusual animals call it home. Crocodiles are among the creatures that can be seen living among these reefs. The thought of that alone makes us fearful. We always try to avoid crocodiles and are terrified to swim in crocodile-infested waters.
On the other hand, Bartolomeo Bove has the exact opposite attitude and is not frightened to swim with crocodiles. He went to Banco Chinchorro in July 2020 with the goal of scuba diving with American crocodiles. 35 kilometres off the southeast coast of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo lies the world’s largest atoll reef. In addition to being a biosphere reserve, Banco Chinchorro serves as the temporary home for fishermen during the lobstering season.
The world’s densest flock of American crocodiles, numbering over 500 hundred, may be found on this reef. Due to their remote location, these crocodiles are thought to have a genetically pure population. They can be found in a lagoon that belongs to the atoll’s main island. These critters occasionally swim into the open sea close to the fishermen’s stilt homes, and strangely, the two species get along well.
Crocodiles eat the remnants of the filleted fish that fishermen discard, providing food for the hungry reptiles. Bove communicates with these strong, extremely clever animals near their stilted homes in the clear waters beneath the sea. This guy claims that he is not attacked by crocodiles because he approaches them safely, that is, by coming up to them or standing at their level.
When describing his experience diving with crocodiles, Bove told “WhatzViral” that “The crocodiles are extraordinary creatures and being in their presence, so close, in their natural domain was for me a truly breathtaking experience.” However, he added that you should always keep your eyes on crocodiles if you ever find yourself in the water with them.
